How to Knockout Text in Illustrator


Adobe Illustrator is one of the premier vector graphics programs of all time. It is used by professional web, print and fashion designers around the world. The program is capable of almost limitless special effects and stunning designs in the hands of a professional. However, not all of these effects require professional skills or complicated steps. One simplest effects is the use of knockout text in Illustrator. This simple technique can produce some very interesting results.

        Launch Adobe Illustrator from the "Start" menu or desktop icon.

        Click on the option to create a new print document or web document according to the intended use of your project.

        Click on the shape tool to select the background you wish to use for your knockout text. A rectangle is a common choice.

        Click on the canvas and drag the shape to the desired size.

        Click on the text tool and click on the background shape.

        Select the font size from the drop-down menu above the canvas.

        Type the desired text.

        Click "Type" and select "Create Outlines" or press "CTRL+SHIFT+O."

        Press "SHIFT" and click on the background shape to select it along with the text and outlines.

        Click "Object," "Compound Path" and select "Make" or press "CTRL+8" to knockout the text.
